Five people died in a fiery vehicle crash in Wisconsin, authorities said Saturday.
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that the vehicle crashed into a tree Friday night off a roadway just south of Verona, a town about 11 miles (18 kilometers) southwest of Madison.
The vehicle caught fire and all five occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff's office has identified the victims as a 55-year-old male from Belleville, Wis., a 55-year-old female from Crandon, Wis., a 54-year-old male from Crandon Wis., a 48-year-old female and a 48-year-old male from Brooklyn Park, Minn.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
“It was a devastating weekend on Dane County roads,” said Sheriff Kalvin Barrett in a release. “The Sheriff’s Office alone responded to two crashes that resulted in seven fatalities. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims who are mourning the untimely loss of their loved ones. Please give driving your full attention to reduce crashes and make our roads safer.”
