WISCONSIN — As Hurricane Helene continued to head north after damaging countless communities throughout Florida and other southeastern states, 14 Red Cross volunteers from Wisconsin were already down south to lend a hand.
"We have four [more] who are on their way in what we call our ERVs or our Emergency Response Vehicles," said Rebecca Rockhill, the Northeast Wisconsin executive director for the American Red Cross. "Right now with the storm either just hitting or having passed through parts of Florida, our main priority is shelter care."
Rockhill said that volunteers typically deploy for two weeks or so, and they're helping Americans who've lost so much to the storm almost around the clock while they're there.
"Especially now, when hotels are not available and finding a place to stay is a very difficult thing," Rockhill said. "Our volunteers are staying in our shelters which is where they're going to stay most of the time because that is where the people are at and that is where the help is being provided."
