The Packers made the smart decision to not rush Jordan Love back from his knee injury.
In the process, Malik Willis was able to exact sweet revenge as the Packers routed the Titans team that gave up on him.
Sunday's 30-14 victory at Tennessee improved the Packers' record to 2-1.
First of all, General Manager Brian Gutekunst had the vision to trade for Willis. After watching the preseason, he made the judgment that the Packers still needed a quarterback that could keep the ship afloat in case Jordan Love got hurt.
I’m sure Gutekunst didn’t think Love would get injured in the opener, so Willis had to swim in the deep water quickly.
That’s where play caller Matt LaFleur comes in.
He leaned on Josh Jacobs and the running game last Sunday in the victory over the Colts.
At Tennessee, Willis was able to do more and haunted his old team. LaFleur opened up the playbook a bit and Willis responded. Give Willis a ton of credit for guiding the Packers to a pair of victories.
There’s credit to be given all around. The offensive line gave Willis time. The defense sacked Will Levis eight times, stopped a 4th and 2 and provided points with a Jaire Alexander pick 6. They have seven interceptions already this season, matching the total of all of last season.
Punter Daniel Whelan has become a force, making sure opponents don’t get good field position.
The Packers are 2-1 going into an early season NFC North showdown next Sunday at Lambeau Field against the 3-0 Vikings.
Maybe Love is back for that game. Let’s not forget what Willis has done the last two weeks. He kept this Packers season on the right track and we should always remember that.
