WISCONSIN — State Superintendent Jill Underly announced Wednesday that she will run for re-election in spring 2025.

The general election will take place on April 1, 2025. No other candidates have announced they will run for the position yet.

“As the head of the Department of Public Instruction, I’ve focused on meeting the needs of every child, every day,” said Underly in a statement. “All kids belong in our schools, and deserve the support and resources they need to succeed. We also need to support our hard-working professional educators, and all the support staff and administrators who make Wisconsin’s schools go.”

Underly was elected to the role of state superintendent in April 2021. Prior to that, she was a local district superintendent in a rural community in southwestern Wisconsin.

Underly emphasized her priorities as the current state superintendent, including getting more resources for under-funded schools, reforming literacy education, improving mental health support and more. She said she’ll continue to fight for these things if re-elected.

“In this campaign, and in a second term as Superintendent, I want to make sure we continue to make necessary investments in our kids, as well as continue to examine how we evolve education to meet the challenges of the future,” she said in a press release.

Underly said that it’s crucial the public be engaged in the upcoming November election but that work for the spring election starts now.

“This campaign is going to be people-powered,” said Underly.

Underly has deep roots in education, having worked as a principal, classroom teacher, college academic advisor and a state consultant to Title I schools in Milwaukee and across the state. She’s worked in public education for 25 years. She lives in rural Hollandale with her husband and two children.
