MADISON, Wis. — Fewer crossing guards in Madison as the new school year begins has parents reportedly driving their kids to school citing safety concerns.
“The Madison School District is changing their schedule this year,” said Kayla Huynh, a reporter with The Cap Times who covered the district’s crossing guard policy change. “Middle schools now start about an hour after elementary schools, and part of the reason the district changed the schedule is they had pretty bad problems last year with late buses and a shortage of bus drivers.”
Huynh said that city council members have expressed frustration with the change and Madison’s Transportation Committee is set to review current rules.
“[They] are currently weighing whether to change the crossing guard policy to include middle schools,” Huynh said. “They’ve already started to have those conversations, but of course, any decision they make, it would need to go to the City Council.”
