WISCONSIN — Most Wisconsin kids headed back to class this week and many teachers said they are already reminding students about cellphone use policies.

According to the Pew Research Center, 72% of high school teachers in the country said cellphones are creating distractions and major problems in their classrooms. When looking at K-12 teachers overall, one third cited cellphones as a major problem and another 20% said it's a minor problem.

While most schools and school districts have cellphone policies, 30% of teachers said it's hard to enforce them. This is even more common in high school, where 60% of teachers find the policies difficult to enforce.

While adults often see cellphones as a problem in schools, teens reported feeling differently. Only 23% of teenagers said phones make school harder, while 45% said phones make it easier for them to do well in school. Another 30% said phones did not impact school performance one way or the other. When it comes to benefits of cellphones, 70% of teens said they offer more benefits than setbacks.

Here’s what the cellphone policies are in some of Wisconsin’s largest school districts:

If your child's school district is not included in this list, refer to your district's handbook or contact your school administrators directly.
