DANE COUNTY, Wis. — An inmate has died at the Dane County Jail, the Dane County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) confirmed Monday.
DCSO deputies and jail medical staff responded to the intake housing unit in the public safety building portion of the Dane County Jail at about 1 a.m. Monday morning, when an inmate in that unit was found unresponsive.
DCSO said deputies and jail medical staff tried life-saving measures on the inmate. The Madison Fire Department reported to the scene. The fire department’s paramedics took over medical care upon arrival. Despite these attempts, the inmate died.
“The safety, security and well-being of those in our care is a priority that we take very seriously. A death in our facility, regardless of the cause, is thoroughly investigated to the high expectations set by this community,” Sheriff Kalvin Barrett said. “Our condolences go out to the person’s family and loved ones as they mourn this loss.”
The deceased inmate’s name has not been released by officials at this time.
DCSO detectives and the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office said they are investigating the death.
