GREEN BAY, Wis. — Things were going so well during the Green Bay Packers’ 30-7 preseason victory over the Baltimore Ravens at Lambeau Field.
Then Anders Carlson missed a 32-yard field goal attempt in the 4th quarter. Stop the presses. His 54-yard make and Greg Joseph’s 55-yarder earlier in the game would be lost in the shuffle.
Do the Packers have a crisis? Maybe. The personnel moves they make around the cutdown to 53 by Tuesday will be telling. Do they just stick with Carlson because they believe in his potential? Or do move on because he missed a field goal shorter than an extra point? Remember, he missed a league-high 12 kicks last season (field goals and extra points) including a costly miss in the playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
Carlson slipped out of the Packers locker room without talking to reporters. It’s the first time I’ve seen any sign that he wanted to avoid the tough questions that would come his way.
Joseph already has a track record from the Vikings. There’s a reason Minnesota let him go, though.
The third option is to swing a trade for someone about to be cut, or sign someone off the waiver wire. Risky stuff for a team with designs on a Super Bowl run.
None of the alternatives are perfect. That’s the reality for the Packers right now. Better pray that a game doesn’t come down to a kick.
