OCONOMOWOC, Wis. — A new Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic is open in Oconomowoc.
Leaders with the VA said they believe this clinic will best serve veterans in the western suburbs, who’ve been experiencing transportation and driving-distance barriers getting to clinics in Madison and Milwaukee.
The Oconomowoc clinic opened in June 2024, and staff have noticed it’s already filling a big need in just the first few months.
“We have so many veterans traveling from this area, and even west of us, from the Madison area, to get their care,” said Micaela Hughes, the program manager for the Oconomowoc clinic.
The new location offers primary care, women’s health, mental health services and telehealth options.
Arthur Konkel, a U.S. Air Force and Wisconsin Air National Guard veteran, said it has made health care a lot more accessible for him.
He lives in Iron Ridge, which is a more than an hour's drive from the Milwaukee and Madison VA medical centers.
He was able to get from home to his medical check-up at the Oconomowoc clinic in 30 minutes.
“This is so much more convenient,” Konkel said. “This is 30 miles less, so I am happy about that. It’s just very comforting, and it’s just so good to know that there are people out there for us.”
The new clinic is more than 8,000 square feet and is located at 1289 Olympia Fields Drive, just off Highway 67 in Oconomowoc.
This marks the fifth outpatient clinic within the Zablocki VA Milwaukee Healthcare System. The others are located in Appleton, Green Bay, Union Grove and the village of Cleveland in Manitowoc County.
William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans’ Hospital in Madison has outpatient clinic locations in Baraboo, Beaver Dam and Janesville.
