WISCONSIN — Doctors, pharmacists and other health care providers continue to talk with patients about the potential to overdose on drugs intended to treat diabetes and help with weight loss, just one week after the FDA issued a warning about it.

"Certainly seeing people wanting to use it more for weight loss, but it's also become some of our preferred medication for Type 2 diabetes," said Gretchen Kunze, a pharmacist with Gundersen Health System.

Kunze added that dosing issues or directions have lead to certain overdose cases nationwide, as people have likely sought out less reputable providers after primary care providers possibly denied the medications to them.

"There have been barriers to access to these medications," Kunze said. "We might have providers who are not as comfortable prescribing these medications outside that initial indication of Type 2 diabetes. Therefore, we see people utilizing telehealthcare providers to obtain prescriptions."
