GREEN BAY, Wis. — One of the starting spots up for grabs at Green Bay Packers training camp is the cornerback opposite Jaire Alexander.
Eric Stokes is trying to shake off an extensive injury history to claim the job. Stokes is competing with Carrington Valentine for the starting nod. But Stokes said he doesn’t look at it that way.
“It’s just about me,” said Stokes. “Everything else is gonna solve itself. So as long as I get 1% better, I feel like everything else will solve itself.”
Stokes said he’s excited about Jeff Hafley’s defense.
“The biggest difference is the aggression,” said Stokes. “So, we coming at the quarterback, we play more aggressive on the outside as a DB.”
Stokes played only three regular season games last season because of knee and ankle injuries. A hamstring injury limited him to nine games the season before. Because of that, it wasn’t surprising that the Packers didn’t pick up the option year of the rookie contract for the former first round draft pick.
Stokes said it’s refreshing to be healthy.
“I feel good,” said Stokes. “I’m just happy to be back out there, so I’ll take anything. It feels great.”
Stokes has plenty of fans in the Packers’ locker room.
“I can tell that Stokes’ confidence is rising,” said Alexander. “That’s so good for him, because he’s battled through a lot of adversity. I’m just happy for him because when he’s making plays out there, it makes him better and makes everybody better.”
Stokes is bullish on the Green Bay defense under Hafley. He said he is confident they can create more turnovers.
“Heck yeah,” said Stokes. “The game is pretty much, if you get the ball, you win the game. So every day, we try to be plus three on defense. We just want to be plus three. We know if we’re plus three, we get more chances to 10 (Jordan Love), and 10 gonna turn them into touchdowns.”
Packers rookies MarShawn Lloyd and Kitan Oladapo returned to practice from injuries.
