STURTEVANT, Wis. — The apple picking season is off to an early start in southeast Wisconsin.

Normally, the apple picking season at Apple Holler in Sturtevant would start with the pristine and viking apples, but another variety is already kicking off the season.

What You Need To Know

  • Warmer and rainier weather is helping Apple Holler kick off its apple picking season two weeks earlier than usual

  • The season starting earlier is not expected to impact the length of the season

  • Apple Holler is excited to welcome the community to Apple Holler for another fun summer and fall of apple picking

“We have very many sweet apples, very crunchy apples such as the honey crisp, but this one [Lodi apple] is tart, making it perfect for baking and cooking,” said Jennifer Cruz, manager at Apple Holler.

She said usually this variety would not be ready for picking this early at their apple orchard, but the warmer and rainier weather conditions this summer gave the Lodi apples just what they needed.

“[Because of] a lot of the warmer weather and the precipitation, we were able to produce apples as early as two weeks ahead of schedule,” said Cruz.

Cruz believes the best part is that this doesn’t affect the length of the picking season.

She said that’s because they are still waiting for all of their other varieties of apples to finish growing.

“They ripen maybe a couple of weeks in between each other which allows us to continue apple picking with those kinds of staggered apple picking varieties and the abundance of our apples this year. We will be able to apple pick once again until early to mid November as we usually do,” said Cruz.

Cruz said she is excited to welcome the community to Apple Holler for another fun summer and fall of apple picking.
