DOOR COUNTY, Wis. — Door County is one of the key bellwether areas in the country in the race for president.
It’s a county the Biden/Harris ticket won by a just a few hundred votes in 2020.
With the Republican National Convention deep into its business this week, staff with the Democratic Party of Door County are busy preparing for the campaign season ahead. That includes people like John Larson, who serves on the party’s board.
“We’ve been assembling signs and we’ll be getting signs out,” he said. “We have a lot of people stopping by our office asking for signs and we need to keep up with that demand.”
Larson said the party is working to get the Democrats’ message out to people around the county as well as visitors.
“This campaign will be won or lost on a grassroots level where families are, where working-class people are. These are the people who are going to get out and vote and these are the people who will be most affected by the results of this election.”
Door County has correctly backed the winning president for more than two decades. That includes Donald Trump in 2016 and Joe Biden in 2020.
Treasurer Allin Walker said the party doesn’t have much control over that, but it has worked for the last 15 years to bring a brighter shade of blue to Door County.
“What we do have something to do with is the fact the county is now a blue-on-some-maps and purple-on-some-maps thumb in the midst of a fairly red northeastern Wisconsin,” he said.
