RACINE COUNTY, Wis. — At least one child was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and multiple others were injured after two boats collided Sunday night, according to the Racine County Sheriff’s Office.

Police said they were called to the scene of a boat crash on Lake Michigan near Reef Point Marina around 9 p.m. Sunday night.

Two boats were involved in the crash. Three people were on the first boat. Eleven people were on the second boat. Both boats had children on them. Police said in an initial investigation, they found that the first boat was operating at a higher rate of speed when it collided with the other boat.

After the crash, a third boat had arrived on the scene to help victims.

Police said the occupants of both boats have been accounted for. Multiple people were taken to hospitals for treatment. At least one child was transported to Froedtert Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Several agencies, including the sheriff’s office, responded to the crash.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this unfortunate incident, and we hope they all have a speedy recovery. I commend the emergency personnel that immediately responded to this critical situation and provided medical care,” said Sheriff Christopher Schmaling.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is leading the investigation of the crash.
