BELOIT, Wis. — Beloit police shot and killed a man April 28, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ).
The DOJ said around 9:46 a.m. Sunday, April 28, officers with the Beloit Police Department were responding to a 911 call near the 1700 block of Ashland Avenue when they observed a subject with two bladed weapons advancing toward another person.
Officers told the suspect to put the weapons down. However, police said the suspect did not comply. Beloit police officer Nicholas S. Rodenbeck then discharged his firearm and ended up striking the suspect.
Life-saving measures were taken, and the suspect was transported to a hospital. The suspect was later pronounced dead.
The Rock County Medical Examiner later identified the deceased suspect as Michael Ward, 33, of Beloit, Wis.
No one else was injured in the incident.
Rodenbeck was placed on leave, per policy. He has three years of law enforcement experience, per the DOJ.
The DOJ said its Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is investigating the incident and everyone involved is cooperating. It’s being assisted by the Wisconsin State Patrol, Beloit Fire Department, Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office, Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office, a DCI Crime Response Specialist and members of the DCI Digital Evidence Unit.
