GREEN BAY, Wis. — Much of the pre-draft chatter connected the Packers to Iowa defensive back Cooper DeJean.
The Philadelphia Eagles swooped in by trading up to the 40th pick, one ahead of where the Packers were slated to pick.
The Eagles grabbed DeJean and the Packers traded back with the Saints. They got the 45th pick, and additional choices in the 5th and 6th rounds.
At 45, the Packers took Texas A&M linebacker Edgerrin Cooper. The departure of De'Vondre Campbell and the switch to a 4-3 scheme under new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley led to a glaring need at inside linebacker. Cooper's size and speed should help greatly.
Later in the second round, with the 58th overall choice, the Packers addressed their need at safety by picking Javon Bullard from Georgia.
The Packers love those defensive Bulldogs.
Bullard can learn alongside Xavier McKinney, the prize free agent signing. The Packers have totally revamped their safety position.
In the third round, the Packers took a swing at a new “home run hitter.” With Aaron Jones gone, the Packers selected USC running back MarShawn Lloyd.
A few picks later, the Packers took Missouri linebacker Ty’ron Hopper.
Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst had said it was an important night for the organization. The four selections and the procurement of two additional picks on Saturday won’t necessarily generate tremendous excitement. Its production that’s important.
The draft concludes tomorrow with rounds four through seven. The Packers’ draft picks are expected in Green Bay next weekend for an orientation camp.
