WISCONSIN — Despite the rain Wisconsin received last week, much of the state is under an elevated fire danger, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
The DNR is asking everyone to avoid outdoor burning for the time being. It said that embers from any fire can easily get out of control and cause a wildfire in these conditions.
The DNR also cautioned those using off-road vehicles or other equipment to be vigilant, as those objects can often create sparks and start a fire.
At least 37 fires burned on Saturday, April 13, which was the most activate wildfire day the state has had so far this year. Sunday was also saw high fire danger, and the DNR suspected burn permits in 41 Wisconsin counties. You can see the current restrictions here.
Much of southern Wisconsin was under a high fire danger Monday while much of northern Wisconsin was under a very high fire danger.
The DNR gave the public several fire safety tips amid the danger:
- Avoid burning until conditions improve
- If operating equipment, do so early in the morning or late in the day to avoid sparks at peak burn hours
- Make sure to secure dragging trailer chains
- Report any fires early and call 911
