MILWAUKEE — Mayor Cavalier Johnson will continue leading the City of Milwaukee for the next four years. It comes after Johnson defeated challenger David King in the April 2 mayoral election.
“Guess what? We did it!” an enthusiastic Johnson said as he took to the podium at his campaign watch party Tuesday night.
During his victory speech, Johnson vowed to continue looking out for the interests of all Milwaukeeans, with a particular emphasis on safety.
“I believe every citizen in every neighborhood all across our city deserves to live without fear of crime, deserves to live without stray gunshots, and deserves to live without people driving recklessly in our streets,” said Johnson.
While the mayor took some time to bask in his victory, he used much of his speech to look ahead to November, encouraging Milwaukeeans to re-elect President Joe Biden and Sen. Tammy Baldwin.
“Milwaukee must show up and must show out to firmly declare to the nation that we choose democracy and we choose freedom over autocracy and division and we will show up to vote for it,” said Johnson.
This election marks the first time Johnson will serve a full four-year term. He has been in office since 2021, when he was named mayor after former Mayor Tom Barrett resigned to become ambassador to Luxembourg. Johnson won a special election in 2022.
