WISCONSIN — From constitutional amendments to mayoral elections to public school referendums in certain communities across Wisconsin, there will be plenty of results to sort through once polls close Tuesday night in Wisconsin’s Spring Election.
Interesting results to watch will be those tied to the presidential primaries, even though both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump already earned enough delegates to become their respective parties’ presumptive presidential nominees.
“I’m watching for the protest vote,” said Anthony Chergosky, a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. “There’s been a lot of public conversation about the uncommitted or uninstructed vote for the Democratic party primary election, really launched in protest of Biden’s handling of the war in Gaza. The organizers of that effort have placed a target of 20,000 uninstructed votes in the Democratic party primary... Then, there could be a protest vote on the Republican side as well. Even though Donald Trump has locked up the necessary delegates to become the Republican nominee, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley and others are still on the ballot, so we could get a sense, potentially, of the level of discontent with the two presumptive nominees.”
While Tuesday’s results either way might not get much national attention, all that appears set to change for the Badger State as we continue to close in on November.
“There are going to be a lot of high-profile elections,” Chergosky said. “Of course, the headliner: Wisconsin potentially being the decisive state in determining who the next President of the United States will be.”
