What You Need To Know

  • A new proposal by UW President Jay Rothman would raise in-state tuition for undergraduate students by an average of 3.75%

  • If the proposal is considered, it would be the second straight year of tuition increases by UW after 10 years of no increases

  • The proposal will be considered on April 4 by the Board of Regents

When factoring in room and board costs, that average percentage climbs to 3.8%. Segregated fees would increase to an average of $74 per year.

If the proposal is considered, it would be the second straight year of tuition increases by UW after 10 years of no increases. Last year, tuition increased an average of 4.9%.

“To maintain the excellent education our universities provide, I will be asking regents to approve a tuition increase similar to recent levels of inflation,” Rothman said in a press release.

Rothman said UW will be conducting an update affordability review that will become available in the fall. The previous review, done in 2022, found that when compared to other Midwest schools, Wisconsin’s public universities were among the most affordable.

“Our universities are facing challenging economic realities, and students and parents should know that we plan to be good financial stewards. Maintaining our affordability advantage, especially compared to our peers, is a priority because we want more students to get access to the unlimited opportunities our universities provide,” Rothman continued in the press release.

UW said seven universities are also considering additional increases on top of the 3.75% increase in tuition to help cover other funding needs, such as academic advising, financial aid and faculty hiring.

Rothman said he announced the increases now so that students and parents have “adequate time to plan.” The proposal will be considered on April 4 by the Board of Regents.
