WISCONSIN — Cherry Starr was the wife, and then widow, of Green Bay Packers legend Bart Starr. Yet her own personality and light is worth remembering after the news of her passing at the age of 89 spread on Tuesday.

The Starr Children’s Fund shared the message on its website, saying she “passed away peacefully at her Birmingham home with her family and close friends at her side.”

I interviewed Cherry a few times. I’m certainly not claiming we were close, but she certainly made an impact on me. This was a woman who was classy — strong, yet dignified.

Whenever I was with her and Bart, he always introduced her very quickly. He included her in everything, and with good reason. She was warm, friendly and wise.

The world needs more people like Cherry Starr.

People who are genuine are impossible not to like. She loved Green Bay, Wisconsin and the Packers.

In all my years of sportscasting, she’s one of the best people I met.

Yes, she was married to Bart.

Don’t ever forget who Cherry was, though.
