What You Need To Know

  • Saturday was International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

  • The day is designed to recognize the six million people killed in the Holocaust

  • The Milwaukee Jewish Federation is hosting an event Sunday that examines the Holocaust and events leading up to it

The United Nations made the day official in 2005, encouraging all member nations to honor the six million Jewish people and other minorities killed by the Nazis. This International Holocaust Remembrance Day comes at a time when reports of antisemitism are growing.

Samantha Abramson is the executive director of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Holocaust Education Resource Center.

Abramson said it’s especially important to remember the Holocaust in a time when antisemitism is on the rise. Milwaukee Jewish Federation is leading several events to commemorate and remember those impacted by the Holocaust.

The Holocaust Education Resource Center is hosting an event on Sunday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. The event, which will take place at the Polish Center of Wisconsin, is called Weimar Germany and the Rise of Nazism. It will focus on the lead up to the Holocaust and the political and social climate that gave rise to Nazism. To learn more about the event, you can visit the HERC website.
