You can point to the Anders Carlson missed field goal or the Jordan Love interception on their last drive. Still, as Matt LaFleur said “it’s never just one play.”

The Packers’ 24-21 loss to the 49ers Saturday night in Santa Clara left mixed emotions.

Yes, the season is over—but the Packers went further than almost anyone expected.

As Jordan Love said “this one will sting for awhile.” What makes it painful is that, like so many other close losses this season, the Packers could have won.

Not coming away with a touchdown on any of the first three trips in the red zone. Darnell Savage dropping a possible “pick 6.” You get the idea. Plays that will haunt players and fans for a long time.

So, at about 11:00 Saturday night, how many of us could smile and say “what a great season”?

It’s true, but that doesn’t make the ending hurt any less.

When the season started, the Packers wanted to find out if Jordan Love was their long-term quarterback. That’s the biggest thing this whole season was about. They got their answer and they’ll sign him to a huge contract this offseason.

The hope is that Love will lead the Packers to the playoffs many times in the future. Still, for now, even Love admits, “this stings.”
