TOWN OF CRESCENT, Wis. — State Department of Justice (DOJ) investigators said a suspect died in Oneida County after a standoff with police.

The incident occurred in the Town of Crescent, near Rhinelander, in the evening on Jan. 20, 2024.

Tactical team members from the Vilas, Oneida, Marathon and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Offices responded to the residence they were looking into a 911 hangup call at.

According to officials, someone in the home started shooting at the Oneida County sheriff’s deputies and the officers fired back before retreating to cover.

The DOJ said verbal commands were attempted without response and non-lethal tactics were deployed. Eventually, one subject came out of the residence and was evaluated by emergency medical services. Officers found the other subject dead inside of the home.

The DOJ has released no other information about the two suspects involved.

The Department of Criminal Investigation will continue to review the incident and will turn over their findings to the Oneida County District Attorney.
