GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers will try to pull off another surprise when they face the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers Saturday night in California. It’s the NFC Divisional Playoffs.

If this seems like a common playoff matchup, that’s because it is. It is the 10th time they’ve met in the playoffs in the last 30 years. This is the third time in the last four years that these teams have met in the playoffs. The 49ers have won the previous two playoff games against Matt LaFleur’s Packers.

Here are three things to watch Saturday night.

49ers ‘trigger man’

San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy went from being “Mr. Irrelevant” (the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft) to a star. Purdy set a franchise record for passing yards in a season with 4,280 and threw 31 touchdown passes. He’s the first 49ers quarterback to throw over 30 since 2001.

Running games loom large

Whichever team runs the ball better probably will have the upper hand Saturday night. Aaron Jones of the Packers has rushed for at least 111 yards in the last four games. Christian McCaffrey of the 49ers rushed for 1,459 yards this season with 14 touchdowns. He’s also a dynamic player on screen passes.

Connections

Familiar faces on the 49ers include former Packers linebacker Oren Burks. Johnny Holland is the 49ers linebackers coach. He played and coached in Green Bay. San Francisco’s run game coordinator and offensive line coach is Milwaukee native Chris Foerster.

The Packers are 10-4 in Saturday postseason games. That’s second only to the 49ers at 13-5.
