WISCONISN — As more snow and freezing temperatures make their way to the state, it’s important to use caution on the road. During winter storms, only travel if you have to.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) said drivers around the state can expect reduced visibility and changing conditions.

Prepare your vehicle

WisDOT reminded drivers to keep an emergency kit well stocked in their cars.

WisDOT also recommends keeping fuel tanks at least half full to keep fuel lines from freezing. Plus, drivers are less likely to run out of gas should they get stranded.

Also, it’s important to make sure a vehicle’s battery, anti-freeze and cooling systems are in good condition, especially in preparation for frigid temperatures.

Snowplow safety

WisDOT said snowplow drivers will work around the clock as they work to keep the roads safe for Wisconsinites. There are nearly 115,000 miles of roads across the state.

WisDOT said that state law requires drivers stay at least “200 feet back on a highway with a speed limit more than 35 miles per hour” and “75 feet back on a road with a slower speed limit” when approaching a snowplow.

Road conditions ahead of snowplows are likely poor, WisDOT explained. Use extra caution if passing a snowplow. Snowplow drivers have limited visibility.

Winter driving tips

WisDOT provided these winter driving tips ahead of Friday’s forecast:

  • Clear snow and ice from vehicles before traveling
  • Snow means slow. Allow extra travel time, following distance, and reduce your speed during winter conditions
  • Be cautious on bridges, overpasses, and entrance and exit ramps
  • Don’t be overconfident in four-wheel or all-wheel-drive vehicles. All vehicles require additional time and distance to stop in adverse conditions
  • Avoid using cruise control in winter conditions
  • Buckle up and put your phone down while driving. Every trip, every time
  • Move over or slow down for stopped emergency vehicles
  • In case of a crash or slide off, stay in the vehicle, turn on the hazards, call 911 and move vehicle(s) out of traffic if possible
