GREEN BAY, Wis. — The Green Bay Packers are preparing for their playoff game Sunday in Texas against the Dallas Cowboys.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur knows what the NFL playoffs are like from personal experience. Many players on his young team do not.
LaFleur is fine with the Packers being more than a touchdown underdog.
“It’s always a challenge, especially going down there,” said LaFleur. “What have they won, like 16 games in a row or something like that? So they’ve been very good at home. And they’re a very talented team with great coaches, but we’re excited for the opportunity.”
“Everybody in here is a competitor,” said Packers running back A.J. Dillon. “That’s a core of our team. Everybody is kind of gritty. We all like ball. We all want to win. So underdog or the favorite, we don’t really care about that. It’s just about an opportunity for us to go play. We’re all going to play. We’re excited and amped up for it.”
For the second straight week, Packers quarterback Jordan Love was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
“It’s not just me. The whole offense is playing well,” said Love.
“He’s really decisive with the ball,” said Packers guard Jon Runyan. “He places the ball so well, doesn’t make mistakes with it. Besides that one fumble, it was really just a spotless game from Jordan. He’s been putting together a lot of games like that these past few weeks. Back-to-back NFC offensive player of the week. There are a lot of good players in this league. That’s really high praise for Jordan and I’m happy for him. I feel like this offense is kind of peaking at the right time and (hopefully can) carry us through the playoffs.”
“I think the sky’s the limit for him,” said LaFleur. “I think it all starts with how he approaches the game, and how he approaches life. He’s awesome to come to work with each and every day. He puts the time and effort in and he’s got laser focus.”
The Packers’ practice was really a light workout. It lasted less than an hour. Dillon was the only player who was not able to practice at all.
It’s the first time in the history of the NFL that the two quarterbacks who threw the most touchdown passes face each other in the playoffs. This season, Love threw 32 touchdown passes. The only quarterback to throw more was Dak Prescott, with 36 for Dallas.
“We’ve been playing some of our best ball,” said Love. “We have been getting better every week and have won some important games that we’ve had to win. I think we’re rolling right now and we’re going to carry that momentum, going forward in the playoffs.”
Love respects the Dallas defense, but feels the Packers are well prepared.
“Definitely one of the best defenses we’ve seen all year. But, going back to the Kansas City game, Detroit, I mean, those are two games we played really good defenses as well. So just having that mindset, we got to play our best ball.”
“We’re going to approach things positive this week, as we did the last three weeks,” said Packers receiver Bo Melton. “We did a ‘win and advance’ type of thing. We want to keep going with that and keep playing.”
“It’s a very, very disruptive defense that knows how to get after the quarterback and create a lot of takeaways,” said LaFleur. “If you’re not ready, they can embarrass you.”
“Starting fast is always great,” said Dillon. “Obviously, always going to come down to finishing, but any time you can get that momentum rolling early, I think you kind of give yourself a chance to keep that going throughout the game and give yourself a better chance to win the game for sure.”
LaFleur worked under Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn when Quinn was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.
