MILWAUKEE — With a diverse collection from all around the world, the aquarium at Discovery World is the largest in the State of Wisconsin.
It’s teaching people about the Great Lakes and so much more.
“We have a Lake Michigan tank showing all the species we have in Lake Michigan. Caribbean, Florida Keys, Amazon, and a North Pacific tank, so you are getting a good, all around the world type species,” said Discovery World’s Dive Safety Officer and Aquarist Louis Buccella.
Housing all of those species takes work.
Jonathan Taylor is one of the aquarium’s diving volunteers. He said he loves working with the team at Discovery World, which is why he’ll do anything to help make it thrive, including cleaning the tanks during his volunteer shifts.
“To be able to help maintain it and keep it in good shape for the public to see is a big reason why I volunteer here,” said Taylor.
He said he enjoys watching the kids get excited when they see the tanks.
Taylor said the vast collection at the aquarium is a great inspiration for kids to explore their interests in science.
“When I was a kid, seeing divers in the tank (at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago), is what started it for me, so if I could encourage or inspire kids to be more interested in the oceans, the lakes and the environment, that is awesome,” said Taylor.
