Police said officers arrived on scene and approached the house when a 25-year-old suspect opened fire and officers fired back. After the first round of shots, officers went to the backside of the house and were shot at again by the suspect.

Police said this is when police officer Dan Morrell, 38, was shot by the suspect. Morrell suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital.

The Milwaukee Police Association (MPA) confirmed Morrell's injuries included a broken femur and nicked artery. MPA said a recovery timeline is unclear.

Morrell has worked with MPD for 16 years, according to the MPA.

Another officer was injured on the scene but did not need medical treatment, the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) said.

Following the shooting, the suspect barricaded himself in the house for hours with four children inside. MPD, Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and the Milwaukee Fire Department were all on scene.

A negotiation team was used to get the suspect to surrender with the four children after an hours-long standoff.

“A tactical setup was established and negotiators were summoned,” Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said. “After several hours of negotiation, a 25-year-old male released the children and surrendered without incident.”

Police said the suspect had a criminal history but did not release his name.

The MPA set up a GoFundMe to support Morrell as he recovers.
