WAUKESHA, Wis. — Over 60 at-risk shelter dogs and cats traveled to Wisconsin to find their new fur-ever homes Monday, Dec. 18. The animals came from Louisiana and Alabama.

The Humane Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha County (HAWS), Elmbrook Humane Society, Humane Society of Jefferson County, Humane Society of Southern Wisconsin and Washington County Humane Society took in the pets.

The transport to Waukesha, Wis., was part of the Good Flights Program. The nonprofit started in April 2021 and has since transported 12,000 shelter pets to new homes. This was the Good Flights Program’s 200th flight.

The Good Flights Program “responsibly transports shelter pets to areas where there is a need for adoptable pets and never displaces local shelter pets in the area," HAWS explained.

Now that the Wisconsin-based shelters have taken in the pets in need, each will be individually evaluated and receive any care needed before being available for adoption. HAWS said it expects the animals to be available to adopt within a few days.

All of the animals were fully vetted and health certified before being placed on the holiday-themed flight. Pet carriers were decked out with tinsel while volunteers and employees dawned Santa hats to welcome the pets home to Wisconsin for the holidays.
