MILWAUKEE — The Milwaukee Police Department officer James “Jimmy” Nowak, who was in a car accident on Dec. 3 in Oak Creek, Wis., has died from his injuries.

Oak Creek Police Department confirmed the news in a press release Wednesday night.

The 30-year-old Nowak was driving when he collided with a semi-truck in Oak Creek, Wis. on Sunday. Oak Creek Police Department said it responded to the crash at 10:31 p.m. Police said Nowak was extricated from his vehicle and transported to Froedtert Hospital. Nowak was placed in the intensive care unit and police said he was "not expected to survive."

Police said no one else was in the car.

The driver and passenger of the semi-truck were not injured, according to police.

A GoFundMe was set up to support Nowak’s wife, Julia, and his family, here. Nowak served in the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) for over 12 years, the department said.

"The Milwaukee Police Department mourns the loss of Officer James Nowak who honorably served the Milwaukee community and our department for over 12 years. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and our members who are immensely suffering from this tragedy," MPD said on Facebook.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson reacted to the news on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday.

"My thoughts are with the family, friends, and colleagues of Police Officer James Nowak. Sunday evening’s crash in Oak Creek is a tragedy for the entire City of Milwaukee," Johnson said in the post.

On Tuesday, a tribute to Nowak — featuring a cross and flag — was placed near the scene of the accident. Throughout the day, people braved the rainy conditions to lay flowers at the site near Pennsylvania Avenue and Oak Street.

Dean Bratel was among those who came to the tribute. Bratel said he is cousins with Nowak’s wife. Bratel said he was shocked to learn what happened Sunday and spoke highly of Nowak’s commitment to the community and to his family.

“Upstanding guy all around. Good guy, good police officer, good friend, good family member, good husband,” said Bratel of Nowak.

Nowak’s partner, MPD officer Peter Jerving, was shot and killed earlier this year while on-duty. He was trying to arrest the armed suspect in a robbery.
