GREEN BAY, Wis. — I’ll admit it. I had a sinking feeling when the Los Angeles Chargers took a 20-16 lead over the Green Bay Packers late in the game Sunday at Lambeau Field.
The Packers had lost four games by a total of 11 points and my mind went to the dark place.
Because kicker Anders Carlson had missed an extra point, a field goal wouldn’t do the Packers any good.
They needed a touchdown.
But quarterback Jordan Love directed the Packers downfield and hit Romeo Doubs for the go-ahead touchdown with about two and a half minutes left.
Still time for the Chargers and those dreaded words — “it’s up to the defense now.”
Yes, the Chargers probably should have hit a big play, but receiver Quentin Johnson dropped the ball.
On fourth down, Kenny Clark came up huge when he batted down Justin Herbert’s pass, preserving a 23-20 Packers victory.
4-6 never felt so good. The Packers earned this. They’ve lost so many close games, but this one went their way.
Aaron Jones left with a knee injury, and a Thanksgiving Day game at Detroit beckons. There’s not much time to enjoy this one.
