MADISON, Wis. — Madison Police are investigating after a rock was reportedly thrown at students following a vigil to support Israel.

University of Wisconsin officials said the incident happened on Tuesday. They said the rock was thrown at students from a State Street building. The students also reported they were harassed with “profane and hateful language.”

UW-Madison leaders said they will not tolerate acts of antisemitism, violence, harassment or hate directed at individuals based on their identity.

“That our students had to confront such hateful acts is absolutely unacceptable,” said Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin in a statement. “Antisemitism has no place in our community. We will not tolerate violence of any kind, and we appreciate that the Madison Police Department is responding to this incident with appropriate seriousness.”

University officials said they’re connecting with Jewish community leaders to talk about the incident, the risk of this kind of violence and what the community can do.

While Madison Police are leading the investigation, UW Police are also assisting. Police said anyone with information on the incident can contact the department at (608) 255-2345 or submit a tip through Crimestoppers.

Officials said to increase safety on and around campus, UWPD and MPD are staffing campus events and protests. They are also providing increased neighborhood patrols in the Langdon Street area.
