MILWAUKEE — A lot can change in a year but with no shortage of twists, turns and vote-swaying events, current polls show that the country remains on track for a 2020 rematch in 2024 between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump, despite the ongoing efforts by Republican primary challengers vying for the GOP nomination.

"[Trump] just has a very strong, dedicated base within the party," said Charles Franklin, director of the Marquette Law School Poll. "In our polling, both in Wisconsin and nationally, we see about 70% of Republicans with a favorable view of Trump."

The latest Marquette Law School national survey on a potential rematch between Biden and Trump gave Trump a 3-point lead over Biden in terms of registered voters, but Biden had a 2-point lead over Trump when it comes to likely voters.

Both results were within the poll's margin of error.

"I think it's not surprising that Trump's supporters are very enthusiastic about him, very committed to him," Franklin said. "Biden's support is pretty strong, but it doesn't get the same level of enthusiasm. The irony of this is that Democrats have a more favorable view of Joe Biden than Republicans have of Donald Trump."
