Patterson said he knows physical strains come with the job as barbers and hair stylists are on their feet all day.

“A lot of times we don’t think about it,” said Patterson. “You know, we’re concentrating on our haircuts. We concentrate on making our client look good.”

After suffering from shoulder discomfort, Patterson was referred to a doctor. Through physical therapy, he learned how to find relief from practicing proper posture and body mechanics.

He said he wanted to share these teachings with his cosmetology students.

Patterson teamed up with Dr. Chandler Reinholtz, a physical therapist with SSM Health, to offer physical therapy lessons to aspiring barbers and hair stylists.

“It’s better to be more proactive than reactive,” said Dr. Reinholtz. “It’s not just only barbers and hair stylists. I think that people like construction workers or in other jobs that are very hands on, it’s really great to have them train and learn proper body mechanics.”

Dr. Reinholtz helps students improve their posture while cutting hair and shampooing, which often requires bending. She also shows them how to strengthen muscles and stretch with exercise bands.

Additionally, Dr. Reinholtz devised a step-by-step guide for Patterson’s cosmetology students to study and take home. She said the physical therapy program helps those aiming to succeed as a cosmetologist while staying physically fit.
