It comes amid structural deficits across the Universities of Wisconsin. UW Oshkosh recently trimmed 250 administrative staff and employees, spurring walkouts.

UW-Platteville officials said over the next two days, they’ll meet with 60 employees that will be notified of layoffs or non-renewals.

The university said they have permanently cut 31 open positions. Another 32 people took early retirement packages, according to the university. Of those positions, at least 20 won’t be refilled.

When broken down by job type, there were 49 academic staff, 27 university staff, 20 limited appointments, 11 faculty retirements, and four positions from other categories that were included in the cuts.

Over the last year, the university has also cut 27 administrators and academic leaders, bringing those positions back to pre-2013 levels.

“I realize that these decisions are much more than numbers and budgets. They affect our people,” said UW-Platteville Chancellor Tammy K. Evetovich in a statement.

The university said it will offer counseling services, Universities of Wisconsin benefit presentations, outplacement assistance and appeals process information as a result of the layoffs.

It said notice periods for the layoffs will be between three and 12 months. Those periods will be determined by employment classification and length of service.

The university said the reorganization has allowed it to reduce the fiscal year 2025 structural deficit by more than $9 million.
