WALWORTH COUNTY, Wis. — The Walworth County Fair is the largest county fair in the state of Wisconsin. It takes place every Labor Day weekend.

General manager Larry Gaffey said it’s known as the last hurrah of summer for many families.

“We have a saying that it’s one last summer smile,” said Gaffey.

This year the fair celebrated 174 years of tradition.

“What makes us unique is the amount of exhibiters we have, from quilts to cows,” said Gaffey. “This year our office processed more than 15,000 entries to the fair.”

He said there’s something for everyone.

“For me, the fair is about showcasing the best that the area has and what humans can do,” said Gaffey.

He estimated there were 150,000 visitors this year, regardless of the heat.

“It (heat) will probably affect attendance in the afternoon, but as the day progresses towards the evening, they’ll come out again,” said Gaffey. “We’re busy right now. We’re driving around and it’s hard to get around now.”

Gaffey encouraged people to stay hydrated and to check out the fair food.

John Squire has served his famous corn dogs for the past 49 years at Squire’s Dog Haus. He said he enjoys seeing people have fun at the fair.

“Just the people at the fair,” said Squire. “Smiles and mostly everyone is friendly. And it all works out good.”

Gaffey said he hopes to continue traditions like the corn dogs from Squire’s and other long-time events for years to come.
