MADISON, Wis. — It’s almost the unofficial end of the busy summer travel season.

Wisconsin destinations have seen record travel numbers this year, with major water park attraction visits increasing by about 10% over last season.

However, the busy season isn’t over yet. Wisconsinites will take the streets for the three-day Labor Day weekend. The American Automobile Association predicts that travel for the holiday will be up 4% compared to 2022.

“Labor Day weekend will be the big sendoff to what has been an extremely busy summer travel season,” said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA.

Cruise bookings this year are up 19% and international bookings up by 44%, according to AAA.

The automobile group said the top destinations in the U.S. during Labor Day this year are Seattle, Orlando, Anchorage, New York and Las Vegas.

Those taking to the road though will see similar gas prices to last year, AAA officials said. The average cost per gallon in Wisconsin as of Aug. 30 was $3.59. AAA said Thursday between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. will be the busiest time on the roads during the long weekend.

“The best times to travel by car over Labor Day weekend are early in the morning or in the evening,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.
