MILWAUKEE — With a higher volume of traffic flowing into the city for the first GOP presidential debate, the Milwaukee Police Department announced several roads will be closed downtown.

Before you head out this Wednesday, be sure you’re aware of which streets you cannot access.

The following streets will have towaway zones with no parking and closures starting at 3 p.m. on Wednesday:

  • N. 6th Street from W. McKinley Avenue to W. State Street
  • W. Juneau Street from N. 6th Street to N. MLK Drive
  • N. 5th Street from W. McKinley Avenue to W. Juneau Street
  • N. Vel R. Phillips from W. McKinley Avenue to W. Juneau Street
  • N. Vel R. Phillips to N. MLK Drive (W. Highland Avenue)

Police said restrictions for these streets will apply to both sides of the road.

If you’re attending the event, you’ll be required to go through a screening point to park at the following places:

  • Parking structure on N. 5th Street / W. McKinley Street.
  • Parking for business on N. Vel Phillips / W. State Street and N. MLK Drive / W. Highland Avenue

Police said closures are subject to change based on any “unanticipated factors that may arise.”

Police also said those attending the debate or simply commuting to the city should try to add on additional travel time to their route, as there may be delays. They suggested also using an alternative route if you’re looking to avoid traffic congestion.

The debate takes place Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 8 p.m. at Fiserv Forum.
