WAUKESHA COUNTY, Wis. — The $1.58 billion Mega Millions jackpot winner may not have been in Wisconsin, but some businesses that sell lottery tickets are winning big themselves.

A recent influx in big money jackpots from state and national lottery drawings has meant more customers going to the Pewaukee Corner Pump.

Owner Ed McMahon, who also owns three other gas stations in Waukesha County, said there was a steady line of customers in recent days leading up to the drawing. In addition to profit from the ticket sales themselves, McMahon said some people also make other purchases while coming in.

“Usually they are here just to buy the lottery ticket, but next time they might decide they stop here for their cup of coffee or something else,” McMahon said. “I feel it is a very good thing for business.”

The Pewaukee Corner Pump has developed a lucky reputation as a place to buy a ticket. In 2017, they sold a $156 million winning ticket. It is a reason McMahon thinks some customers choose to buy their tickets at the station.

While the crowds are welcomed, he noted that keeping up with demand can be challenging.

“In this economy and the way labor is, it is a little more difficult,” said McMahon. “It does put the stress on the full-time people, but it is good. Something I have to sit down and figure out.”

McMahon said staff at his Pewaukee store spent much of the day Wednesday catching up with other needed tasks around the shop because of how busy they were earlier this week prior to the jackpot drawing.
