MILWAUKEE — As students across Wisconsin prepare to head back to school this fall, some will inevitably have to adjust to more strict social media rules from their parents than what was in place this summer, like it or not.

"Summer is often a time when kids get a little bit more opportunity to be a little relaxed with some of their rules," said Dr. Megan Moreno, an adolescent expert with UW Health Kids, "and sometimes that includes rules around social media."

Dr. Moreno, who also serves as the co-director of the American Academy of Pediatrics Center of Excellence in Social Media and Youth Mental Health, added that this is an ideal time to sit down with their kids and decide what 'family rules' toward social media will be for the year ahead.

"Having that conversation at least a week in advance [of the first day of school] is ideal," Dr. Moreno said.
