WISCONSIN — Many areas of Wisconsin are seeing heat advisories and temperatures nearing triple digits in some regions this week.

The National Weather Service on Tuesday issued an Excessive Heat Health Warning for Wednesday, Aug. 23, which will go from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

During that time, the heat index is expected to be near 105-110 degrees. Officials said that an Excessive Heat Watch remains in effect for Thursday.

With these warnings in place, it’s important to know how to stay safe.

Wisconsin has many public cooling centers available to those hoping to beat the excessive heat.

211 Wisconsin, a social services organization, has a hub for cooling centers throughout the Badger State. Cooling centers are places for people to seek temporary relief from extreme temperatures.

If no specialized center opened, community members can go to public spaces to beat the heat. Public spaces include local libraries, neighborhood centers, senior centers, shopping malls, public beaches and pools.

There are more than 100 cooling centers throughout Wisconsin. Click here to search for one in your area.

Public locations to escape extreme temperatures are generally open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday, but those times may vary.

According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials, it’s also important to limit physical activity outside, drink plenty of water, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and take cool baths and showers.

Wisconsinites should also be mindful of heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke symptoms.
