MILWAUKEE — Wisconsin’s population is on the decline, according to new U.S. Census Bureau data released Thursday.

Madison was one of the few geographic areas with a population of more than 50,000 that gained residents between April 1, 2020 to July 1, 2022; the Madison area gained 3,134 residents.

Meanwhile, the Milwaukee, La Crosse, Kenosha and Green Bay geographic areas saw a population decrease. By percentage, La Crosse saw the biggest decrease, hitting a 2.5% drop. Milwaukee was right behind with a 2.4% drop, losing 13,920 residents.

The chart below shows the cumulative estimates of resident population change for 10 incorporated places of 50,000 or more, listed in order of the overall percentage change.
