WISCONSIN — With more Wisconsinites set to fire up the grill, campfire or backyard bonfire over Memorial Day weekend, for a first time this year, health experts in Wisconsin want to remind everyone to not forget safety steps whenever fire's involved.

"It's going to be a fun weekend and we just want people to be safe," said Melissa Kersten, an advanced practice nurse practitioner with Ascension Wisconsin who specializes in burns and wound care. "Some of the things we like to remind people of are when you're grilling, making sure your grill is at least 20 feet away from any structure — your garage, your house — because if there were to be a flash of flame, we want to be sure there's no chance that any structure can start on fire..."

Kersten added that especially when accelerants such as lighter fluid are involved, a quick burst of fire can lead to serious, long-term injuries.

"It can take just seconds," Kersten said. "The older you are and the younger you are, the thinner your skin is... Just seconds can really impact the depth of your burn and the injury itself."

And if you're burned?

"The very first thing we always encourage people to do is rinse [the burned skin] with very cold water," Kersten said. "Running water is best, but if that's not available, standing water or something cold— if water isn't the first thing available, even lemonade, just something to get it cooled down because that can really decrease the depth of that injury."
