Any Packers fans concerned that the organization was not giving new quarterback Jordan Love enough help had to enjoy Friday night.
The Packers spent all three of their selections on offense. A pair in Round 2 and their third round choice.
In the second round, with the pick they got from the Jets (42nd overall) in the Aaron Rodgers trade, the Packers took 6’6” tight end Luke Musgrave from Oregon State. This was a position of need. The Packers say the knee injury Musgrave had last year is not a long-term concern, and he has been medically cleared.
The Packers traded down twice with their own second round selection. From 45 to 48 (with Detroit) and then 48 to 50 (with Tampa Bay). The Packers added two more late round picks with the deals.
With the 50th pick, the Packers took wide receiver Jayden Reed from Michigan State. He’s on the small side (6’0”) but the Packers think he can be a speedy playmaker. The Packers have had tremendous success with second round receivers. Davante Adams, Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Greg Jennings and Christian Watson were all taken in the second round. James Jones came in the third.
In the third round, the Packers took another tight end, Tucker Kraft from South Dakota State. It shows how thin that position was after the free agent departure of Robert Tonyan and the all-but-official departure of the unsigned Marcedes Lewis. It’s the first time in the Common Draft Era (dating back to 1967) that the Packers picked two tight ends within the first three rounds.
It’s way too early to make intelligent judgments about these guys. I must admit that I’m anxious to see how this new era of Packers football unfolds.
