SPARTA, Wis. — Wisconsin experienced a late Spring snowstorm on Sunday night, leaving many towns covered in snow. Sparta, Wis., looked like an April winter wonderland.

Terry Clemmerson has lived in Sparta his entire life and said he was very surprised when he woke up to snow on Monday morning.

“I just got all the yard work done and we get all of our stuff out in the yard, and we get this and this really sucks,” said Clemmerson.

Clemmerson and other Sparta residents spent Monday digging themselves out of the 16 inches of snow they got.

“It is time to walk over and get the snow blower and see how many times she plugs up, I’d rather unplug the chute than keep shoveling,” said Clemmerson.

Jared Tessman, the emergency management director for Monroe County, said with warmer temperatures forecasted for the end of the week, a little manual labor could be the least of Clemmerson’s worries.

“We get a lot of flooding because the water eventually comes to the La Crosse River before it flows west out of the county,” said Tessman.

Before Sunday’s storm hit, Tessman said he felt confident that spring flooding would miss Monroe County. However, he said this storm could change things and wants the community to be prepared for anything.

“Know where to go if you are evacuated; know your escape routes. Have your electronics charged up and make sure you consider your pets,” said Tessman. “Have supplies for your pets, knowing that you could be out of your area for days.”
