MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee police continue to grieve the loss of officer Peter Jerving.
Jerving, 37, was shot and killed earlier this week while on-duty. He was trying to arrest the armed suspect in a robbery.
Milwaukee Police Asst. Chief Nicole Waldner said the entire department remains in mourning.
She said tributes from community members continue to pour in at District 4, where Jerving worked, and across the city.
Waldner said those shows of support are appreciated.
“Community members, other extended family members, are coming to place items on the squad car at District 4, and I think that’s somewhat soothing,” Waldner said. “It’s a reminder, there’s sadness, but it’s soothing too. It shows you people are thinking about you.”
“I know for me, personally, when I saw that the Hoan Bridge was lit up blue, I know that definitely struck me,” the Assistant Chief continued. “I don’t know that we’ve ever done that before. I don’t recall that happening. It was hard to see, but it was very appreciated.”
Waldner said other police districts across the city have stepped up to support the officers at District 4.
“All of the other districts have been pitching in, working extra, and taking over District 4’s assignments, so that District 4 can grieve, and go through their debriefs with our psychologists and our wellness team,” Waldner said.
