MILWAUKEE — Earlier this week, Milwaukee police officer Peter E. Jerving was fatally shot while trying to catch a robbery suspect.

Since then, the community has shown an outpouring of support, from placing flowers on a squad in Milwaukee Police Department’s District Four to praying for an end to the violence.

Jerving’s funeral will take place on Monday, Feb. 13 at Elmbrook Church.

Amid his death, several organizations and individuals have started fundraisers to help support family and those close with Jerving.

Waukesha resident Victoria Grinwald, is one of those individuals. Grinwald set up a GoFundMe for Megan Bradley, Jerving’s long-time partner.

“The loss of Peter is felt by the community, the MPD, his family, and many loved ones, including his long-time partner, Megan,” said Grinwald on GoFundMe. “We set this fund up in her honor for the things she may need at this time and going forward, due to being without Peter. Clearly, the loss is life-changing. Peter will never be forgotten.”

The fund has already raised over $13,000, which far exceeds the goal of $5,000.

Local businesses are also chipping in.

Jen’s Sweet Treats in Cudahy will give 100% of their daily sales on Feb. 16 to officer Jerving’s family.

Kelly’s Bleachers in Wind Lake took to Facebook Wednesday to share they also want to help support Jerving’s family.

“Like many of you, we’re saddened to learn of Officer Peter Jerving’s tragic death in the line of service,” Kelly’s Bleachers said in the Facebook post. “Peter was a member of our Friday night Meetups group.”

They said Jerving was scheduled to play volleyball with them on Friday. To honor him, they’ll be donating all cover charges and money made on food and beverage purchases on Friday to his family. The donation is made possible from the U.S. Title Company, according to the post.

“While this cannot replace a great person, we hope it will help Peter’s family during this difficult time,” the business said in the post.

Volunteer-based MPA Fallen Heroes, Inc. has also stepped up to support the family. They’re a Milwaukee organization whose mission is to help families “in the event of an officer’s death, injury, disability or extraordinary need.”

They also have a general fund which helps cover medical expenses, living expenses, and other things that an injured officer or their family may endure.
