MILWAUKEE — Former Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources secretary Preston Cole will take over as director of Milwaukee’s Department of Administration, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson announced Tuesday.

“Preston brings an unparalleled background to this new position. His leadership experience and his deep understanding of Milwaukee city government make him an ideal candidate to head the Department of Administration,” Johnson said. “I am very pleased he accepted my invitation to come back to a top job in my cabinet.”

As director, Cole will oversee several things, including the budget, the Office of Equity and Inclusion, lobbying efforts, Environmental Collaboration, purchasing, information technology and Block Grant.

He takes on the new role after retiring from his role as DNR secretary for Gov. Tony Evers’ administration, a position he held for four years. Prior, he was commissioner of the Milwaukee Department of Neighborhood Services and also held several senior roles in the city’s Department of Public Works.

Cole has served in city government for more than three decades.

“I’m humbled and honored to have been asked to serve in Mayor Johnson‘s cabinet as Director of Administration,” Cole said. “On day one, our team will work with an extraordinary group of elected leaders, city staff, and consultants, who are committed to developing new ideas for future work, and creating innovative systems that meet the needs for all whom call Milwaukee home.”

Cole’s nomination is subject to confirmation by the Milwaukee Common Council, which could take place later this month.
