MILWAUKEE — On Monday, a Milwaukee Fire Department station reopened after being shut down for nearly six years.

What You Need To Know

  • Milwaukee Fire Station 28 has reopened after being closed in 2017 for budget reasons

  • The goal is to improve shared resources between departments

  • Wauwatosa will now have access to a Milwaukee fire station

  • Part of mutual aid pilot program in Milwaukee County

Station 28, located at 424 N. 30th Street, serves the city’s west side. It was closed in 2017 due to budget reasons. Now, it is back and serving the city’s west side.

Nearby, the Wauwatosa Fire Department will now begin housing an engine and firefighters at a station off of 64th Street in Milwaukee, near the border between the two cities.

The Milwaukee and Wauwatosa Fire Departments are taking part in a pilot program aimed at improving responses times and making efficient use of resources. The program includes making better use of mutual response opportunities amongst Milwaukee County’s 14 fire departments.

“What we have here is the direct result of intergovernmental and interagency communication and collaboration between the Milwaukee Fire Department and Wauwatosa Fire Department which is one tiny piece of all the shared services,” said Milwaukee Fire Department Chief Aaron Lipski.

As part of the Shared Services Agreement and pilot program, it is the first time since 1956 that an additional fire engine and station have been added to the City of Milwaukee.
